Ukraine: The Untold Story

Ukraine is in the news almost every day; current updates on the war and discoveries of new atrocities splash across newspaper headlines; calls for more funding echo throughout the chambers of Congress – from both parties; international corporations, nonprofits, and philanthropy organizations continue to ask for donations to help fleeing refugees resettle and rebuild their shattered lives.

And Crossroads is doing its part to address the human tragedy. Donations to Crossroads Ukraine Relief Project have provided food, clothing, and shelter (temporary) for more than 4,200 women and children, many with no more than the clothes on their backs and what they could carry in their arms

Unfortunately, what most Americans know about Ukraine revolves solely around this humanitarian crisis.

What is missing from our conversations and coverage is the spiritual crisis unfolding behind the scenes.

Neither pastors, news outlets, politicians, nor pundits are asking the “why” question, let alone answering it. For behind every human tragedy, is a spiritual tragedy – “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

Little known and largely ignored in our coverage of Ukraine’s conflict is the fact that there has been a significant outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Ukraine since its independence from the USSR in 1991. Ruslan Khmyz, president of Kyiv Theological Seminary, explains – “When freedom came to Ukraine, many things completely changed. The number of churches started to grow very fast. Many new Christians dedicated themselves to Jesus and wanted to grow, serve, and proclaim the gospel.”

Over the past two decades, a vibrant church and emerging missionary movement developed in Ukraine. As Joshua Tokar, of the Ukraine Evangelical Theological Seminary, noted, “Ukraine is the main missionary-sending country for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The church is very strong. As far as Europe is concerned, the Ukrainian church is perhaps the strongest and is doing the most for education, training, and sending out workers.”

Unfortunately, the highly evangelistic drive and promising missionary thrust of the Ukrainian Church has itself felt the impact of this war. Progress spiritually in untold numbers of people’s lives and in the reformation
within communities, and the nation itself is under assault. This is the untold story, the story hidden in the shadows of the crises unfolding across Ukraine.

Such spiritual warfare played out on the landscape of human tragedies is nothing new. Jesus reminded us that “… the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:22).

In light of this, we invite you to join Crossroads in:

  • Praying for the Ukrainian Church’s leaders, their missionaries serving in Ukraine and Central Asia, for safety and courage in the face of tyranny and a faithful witness of the gospel.
  • Pray for the thousands of Ukrainians displaced by this war and living in new countries. Let their missionary fervor plant His church throughout Europe, leading a renaissance of spiritual awakening within this dark continent.
  • Do something to help meet the humanitarian needs of the Ukrainian people. Donate to the Crossroads Ukraine Relief Project. 100% of all donations, funneled through our national partners, will be used to feed, shelter (temporarily), and assist Ukrainian families fleeing the chaos. India’s Mission

Church Planting – Assam, India:

Crossroads Church Planting Movements Training (CCPM Training) is a 2-day Training event designed to equip indigenous missionaries with effective Church Planting and Disciple Making strategies targeting unreached and unengaged people groups within their cultural context.

Last month Crossroads conducted a CPM Training for 59 indigenous missionaries, men and women, targeting the villages of the Zeiland, an unreached people group located in Assam, India. Though ethnically Naga’s, the Zeiland tribe centuries ago migrated to Assam and became assimilated into the Hindu culture. No Christian missionary or gospel outreach has taken place among the Zeilang people.

Partnering with Zeme Supportive Mission, a Crossroads missions partner, ensured this Training would translate into effective Church Planting strategies as we targeted over 30 Zeilang villages with the gospel. Our goal – 1 church planted in every Zeilang village. Initial evangelism following this Training has led to 13 new converts in various villages. The formation of new house churches together with extensive discipleship is now underway with new believers.

Crossroads Foundation Created:

The Crossroads Foundation was formed to create a sustainable indigenous funding platform and structure for the future funding of indigenous missionary activity. Grants from the Foundation will be used in deploying indigenous cross-cultural missionaries working in partnership with Crossroads focused on planting churches and disciple-making.

Deploying Indigenous Cross-cultural Missionaries:

Crossroads is preparing to deploy our 1st indigenous cross-cultural missionary from Nagaland, India to Thailand in 2024. Throughout 2022-23 final plans and preparations will be put in place for this historic venture.

Pakistan’s Mission

Last month our Crossroads, Pakistan staff shared the gospel via the Jesus Film with 100 Hindu & Muslim families. From those efforts, 30 individuals became followers of Christ.

As part of our follow-up discipleship program, we provide new believers with a Bible and meet with each of them weekly to discuss and walk through the passages they are studying grounding them in the word of God.

Our Crossroads, Pakistan team members also hand out bibles to non-believers interested in knowing more about Jesus and what the Scriptures say about Jesus.

Though at times dangerous, this “discussion starter” approach is bearing fruit in a land of great opposition and hatred.
